High- Factor SPF

One thing we do well is holiday in the sun – we love nothing more than a good dose of vitamin D. But we also realise how ageing, not to mention harmful, the summer rays can be. So we spend an inordinate amount of time applying suntan lotion on both ourselves and our children. It’s one of the areas of beauty we feel we have pretty much perfected and we know what we’re looking for. Here are our four favourites available to buy online just in time for your next summer break.

Institut Esthederm is possibly the most expensive sunscreen I have ever bought. In some ways I wish I had never actually tried it, but I have and now there is no going back. When I use it I somehow manage to get a tan without burning, it needs minimal reapplication and it really helps combat heat rash. Worth every penny.

I always use Vichy on myself and the kids – I find it gives brilliant coverage but doesn’t cause a reaction with their sensitive skin. The non-stick anti-sand version is next level. It’s super-lightweight and dries almost instantly, so it’s easy to apply to small people before they get covered in sand… again.

I love the entire Avène sunscreen range which I also use on my children’s skin – it’s paraben-free, certified UVA-compliant and very water-resistant, plus it’s very rich in Avène Thermal Spring Water with natural soothing and anti-irritating properties. It’s a fluid, moisturising texture and comes in a spray formula too, though I prefer the tube as I find it easier to apply.

If you hate looking shiny in the sun, try Bioderma Photoderm Aquafluide SPF 50+, which offers a very high sun protection with a fluid texture, as light as water. It has a dry-touch finish that makes it the perfect sunscreen for all skin types, even combination to oily skin like mine. It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, water-resistant, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. I use it on my face and have just had a sunburn-free holiday in the sun; I’ll be buying it again for my upcoming Greek trip.
