The Icons 12 steps guide to holiday packing perfection
How to fake being organised and get your holiday look spot on with our lazy person’s guide to packing. From colour co-ordination to zip up bags, we promise you’ll arrive with everything you need, looking like a seasoned traveller. Trust us, it’s much easier than you think.
My idea of packing used to be (Laura close your eyes), emptying the entire contents of my summer drawer into a suitcase. It’s not that I didn’t like the idea of being prepared, on the contrary, it would have been a relief to arrive at my destination with everything I needed rather than three bikini tops and no bottoms, but I just felt it was a waste of time. This laissez-faire attitude was fine until I had my son, Jacob.
Having a child forces even the laziest of packers to get their act together, and since doing so I must admit I’ve never looked back. Laying out your clothes a few days before means you won’t forget essentials such as underwear (I realise it’s increasingly sounding like I spent my summer holidays going commando- not the case!). Choosing a strict colour palette will help to narrow down your choices, rather than feeling like you have to pack every summery piece you own- another packing strategy I employ. To ensure that I don’t end up with a load of separates that don’t work altogether I make sure that I pack outfits rather than throw in individual pieces. I find it helps no end to be able to wake up at the destination and already have my outfit for each day sorted. With all this in mind, I invited our photographer Eva K. Salvi to keep me company as I prepared for my upcoming family holiday to Martinhal in Portugal to illustrate how to pack the perfect suitcase.
