Lips VS Eyes

When it comes evening make-up we always choose between a statement eye or a statement lip. The more subtle the clothes, the more dramatic the make-up. So a full-on tulle dress might only require a dab of gloss on the lid while a monochrome ensemble requires more of a powerful, deep red lip. Here are our four favourite party beauty looks that will never let a good outfit down.

Hourglass simply does the best statement matt lipgloss in my opinion. I have a couple of glosses I use regularly, but I find I always go back to Hourglass, and I wonder why I ever bothered to stray. The pigment is beautifully rich and it glides on easily. It has a matt finish, but it’s not cakey or drying, which means it doesn’t need an expert hand for application. This bright geranium red works for both summer and winter.

My dress-up failsafe is a black eyeliner flick – nothing too big or statement, but something that makes my lashes look thicker and frames my eyes. So I am always on the look out for a good eyeliner that will do just that in one easy application. This YSL felt-tip liner is one of the best I have used. It makes a wide enough line that I can actually see it, but not too wide for it to be unwieldy. The application is smooth and it comes off easily with make-up remover.

There’s never a time when I do my ‘Bette’ eye look that I don’t get asked where my eye shadow is from. Charlotte Tilbury’s cream shadow pots have been a favourite of mine for years, and nothing else quite cuts it since I discovered them. This shade will give your eyes a copper metallic ‘wet lid’ look that is both noticeable and wearable. Just dab your fingers in the pot and spread it over your eyelids; for a more dramatic effect add a little to the corner of your eyes and lower lashes.

You know you’re onto something good when you have to buy it again: currently I’m on my Nars Cruella crayon number two and that is a lot to be said for a product that can last you years. Why do I love it? Because it’s just the perfect shade of wintry red, a dark cherry hue perfect for a festive lip that is matt and modern. Just a tip: invest in a large pencil sharpener to fit the chunky pen.
