In Conversation with Nicky Zimmermann
Nicky Zimmermann was once given the following advice: “Never start a fashion business and never work with a family member”. Luckily for us, she ignored both. Where else are you going to shop when you want swimwear that packs a punch, fuses catwalk fashion with cutting-edge fabric technology and allows you to feel as beach-fabulous as you will ever be (NB Zimmermann’s pattern cutters are all trained in lingerie and it shows)? We catch up with head designer and creative director Nicky Zimmermann to talk the perils of too much sun and why we should always remember to step out of our comfort zone.
Nicky Zimmermann launched her eponymous label at the tender age of 22 with her sister Simone, selling clothes in Sydney’s Paddington Markets in 1991. “It seemed normal – my parents had their own business and that’s what my sister and I grew up with,” she says. Early on, unlike other brands, they fused swimwear with considered fashion design. In the 20-odd years since then, Zimmermann has morphed into a juggernaut that constantly pushes design and fabric-technology boundaries, and which shows their ready-to-wear at New York fashion week (a vast offering that also includes hats and boots). The design ethos – “I approach a bikini in the same way I do a dress,” explains Nicky – means their beachwear stands out a mile and counts celebrities such as Beyoncé, Karlie Kloss and Kendall Jenner as fans.
