For many of us, some of the most personal items we own are jewellery. Often they'll be pieces we've worn on special days or happy times spent on holidays. Whether they're heirlooms or just some beads picked up from a stall, the connection we feel to them makes them almost part of who we are.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN GREECE?
When I think about my childhood, I remember family walks (usually during the hottest time of the day), across landscapes scattered with ancient ruins. The sound of cicadas singing, and olive trees turned silver from the hot winds. I could smell the sea and I remember always wishing I could go for a swim.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN ATHENS?
There are so many! If I had to choose one, it would be Café Avissinia, near Monastiraki Square. The food is delicious, the view is breathtaking and there’s a laid-back ambience. In summer, I always sit on the terrace for dinner.
WHICH IS THE PERFECT ISLAND TO UNWIND ON?
Kimolos is a small island with gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear waters, colourful villages and fantastic local food. There was a time when there was nobody around, but I’m afraid this insider secret is now a top destination!
WHAT ARE THE GREEK BRANDS WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT?
There are so many good Greek designers, such as Yiorgos Eleftheriades, known for refined textiles with a sophisticated minimal approach; Sophie Deloudi for elegant swimwear; A Totem Für Elita for surreal silk scarves; and Zeus + Dione, a lifestyle brand exploring Greek heritage.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY?
My little downtown heaven: Neofytou Douka 4, in the entrance of the Museum of Cycladic Art. It has an important permanent collection of ancient art, as well as a café and shop. There are also cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions curated by Afroditi Gonou, the London-based art advisor.
