    Tamara Taichman, co-founder
    Introducing

    Tila March

Necessity is often the mother of invention, even when it comes to fashion. Tamara Taichman was a fashion editor at French ELLE (and already known for her unique and recognisable personal style) when she met Nicolas Berdugo, an expert in leather goods working for Louis Vuitton at the time. Despite the plethora of choices available to her as an editor, Tamara was struggling to find the perfect bag to carry her essentials as she darted between catwalk shows. She wanted something functional, versatile and, of course, super-stylish.

With this in mind, Tamara sketched her dream bag (the Zelig) at the table of a restaurant, and Nicolas made it. And like something out of a fashion fairy tale, when Tamara took her bag on its first outing (to the YSL fashion show), all the fashion buyers wanted it. In 2006, Tila March (the combination of Tamara and Nicolas’s first names and March, the month they met) was born. Even better, the pair fell in love and got married.

Just one year later, our own Laura Fantacci was in Paris taking appointments as a shopping editor when she met Tamara and her impressive debut collection. She instantly fell in love with the elegant simplicity of the bags that still had that cool, Parisian edge. She took home a burgundy suede messenger bag, which she's carried for over a decade in many guises, from stylish maternity bag to workday staple and carry-on essential. Every step of the way, friends asked her where it was from – as you might guess, this beloved bag has worn beautifully.

There are certain characteristics that define a Tila March bag: they are incredibly well-made, the designs are filled with thoughtful details that are as practical as they are elegant, and every collection features unique colours and fabrics. They appear simple at first glance, but are full of stylish complexity when you take a closer look. Which is really at the heart of the Parisian cool-girl style that Tamara so effortlessly embodies in her designs. Every season, we love that Tila March bags still fulfil that desire Tamara set out with in the early days: they're functional, modern and timeless.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT IN PARIS?

Definitely the Paul Bert flea market at Saint-Ouen, which I love for the ambience and because I always find interior design gems for low prices. I go there on Sunday afternoons, and  it’s such a great example of the Parisian flânerie – that is, the particular way we spend our downtime. In the past, I’ve found porcelain pieces from Vallauris and a lamp from Gio Ponti, plus absolutely incredible pieces of art.

AS A PARIS LOCAL, WE’D LOVE TO KNOW YOUR SECRET HAUNTS.

I’ve always loved going to the Cinémathèque Française and watching all the movies on the programme. I also love Le Rouquet Café in Saint-Germain-des-Prés – it has a 60s design that makes me feel so good. And then there’s the Librairie des Archives on Rue Vieille du Temple, which is my favourite spot to find books about art and fashion that inspire me in my daily work.

    STYLE IS…

Attitude. Parisian women are stylish because of their nonchalance. They don’t have a precise way to dress, but rather what makes them cool is the way they mix their clothes, without thinking about fashion.

WHAT DEFINES A TILA MARCH HANDBAG?

An effortless, chic style. To me, the perfect bag is one that can be carried at any point of the day. This is also the origin of my iconic Zelig bag: a versatile piece that can transform into the perfect accessory in any situation.

WHAT BEAUTY PRODUCTS WILL WE FIND IN YOUR HANDBAG RIGHT NOW?

I carry two products in my bag at all time: a dark brown Sisley mascara and a red Chanel lipstick. Aside from those two essentials, my morning make-up routine is very simple. I use the Eau de Fleur d’oranger from Santa Maria Novella, followed by face cream.
