ISSUE 131
Mulberry is the brand that comes to mind when we think of British leather accessories, but this season the label has also managed to tap into our appetite for all things retro. The nostalgia-laden AW17 collection includes vintage-inspired hatbox bags, checked wool coats and trousers that wouldn’t look out of place at Balmoral, and classic Mary Janes, all in earthy tones of burgundy, ochre and burnt orange. This collection celebrates the Britishness that is at Mulberry’s core (it’s had the same Somerset factory for 46 years), and the clothes really stand out – no small feat for a brand that is primarily known for accessories. The celebrity endorsements of a few years ago have been replaced with a quiet luxury that doesn’t shout, but instead whispers – capturing the prevailing feeling of the moment. It’s official: we want it all.

Round bags are having a moment, but that’s not a reason we would ever use to invest in a bag. A structured circular bag is a chic alternative to the traditional clutch or cross-body; it fits everything you could possibly need and is easy to carry, but still has an air of formality. This version is incredibly lightweight, too
Spanish-born Johnny Coca is the creative director of Mulberry, and the man responsible for turning out two collections of must-have accessories and ready-to-wear hits per year. The Paris-educated designer developed his skills over more than a decade, working first at Louis Vuitton and then with the legendary Phoebe Philo at Céline. Keeping a palpable sense of Britishness is essential to Coca’s vision for Mulberry, something that can be seen in his appreciation for familiar heritage fabrics and vintage designs.
