It is also the first ICONS Update that sees us begin to embrace a post-lockdown ‘new normal’ and the possibilities that come with it. For me, that means being reunited with my family after almost seven months apart. As you read this, I feel extremely lucky to be heading to Italy, where I will be spending the rest of the summer, continuing to juggle childcare and work and, eventually, taking a holiday.
Whether you are planning a staycation or travelling abroad, we’ve tried to fill this issue with everything you need for a blissful summer with plenty of little joys.
For our opening feature, Petro and I looked back at the SS20 catwalk trends and cherry-picked the ones that have inspired our summer wardrobes. From raffia bags to crochet and tie-dye, there is something for everyone, so make sure you check it out. Next up is our features editor Frankie’s piece on the best resort-wear brands to know and shop from for your next beachside holiday. In our pursuit for the perfect high summer wardrobe, we have discovered an array of Black-owned fashion and beauty brands that we are now coveting, including Sika designs, LemLem, Aaks and Jade Swim, as well as Hackney-based homemade soap brand Soapsmith. We hope you will love and support them as much as we do.
In Beauty Focus this month, Petro and I tried and tested four products for the ultimate little luxury – the summer shower. Whether you’re taking yours at home or on holiday, read all about the summery formulas that refresh and hydrate the skin when it needs it most.
Continuing on this season’s theme, what says summer more than a pair of denim shorts? The secret to success is wearing them in a grown-up way, so hopefully my Style Sheet will provide you with some inspiration and ideas on how to style your pair. And if you are looking for an update for your jewellery box (and your inner mermaid), Petro has found the prettiest necklaces, bracelets and earrings with a nod to all things ‘under the sea‘; think pearl, beads and shells.
You will also find our Top 20 swimsuit edit, beautifully arranged in a rainbow theme by our wonderful merchandising assistant Florence – she literally makes me want all of them! Another unmissable summer item wherever you are is the bucket hat, the star of this month’s Unexpected Hero. And finally, for those who prefer a picnic to sunbathing, Petro has handpicked the prettiest items to pack in your hamper.
As I look back through our magazine covers since 17th March, I can almost trace the rollercoaster of emotions we’ve been through over the past 17 weeks. The initial uncertainty, the embracing of a new normal, the appreciation of the many silver linings and learning opportunities that both Covid and the Black Lives Matter movement have brought to our attention. Each issue has brought us a little closer to you, and I really hope that, every third Tuesday of the month, you look forward to, and enjoy receiving, your copy of The ICONS Update. If you do, please refer us to a friend – it really helps us continue doing what we love with our small business.
