  • Glam Up

Party hair and make-up is a balancing act. You want to step it up so it matches the dress code but, to look effortlessly stylish, your make-up needs to contrast with your outfit rather than match it. For instance, a super-glam frock works best with hair that isn’t too ‘done’ and a slightly pared-back face. We turned to our favourite glam squad – make-up artist Lois Moorcroft and hair stylists at George Northwood – for advice on how Laura and Petro should approach their party looks this season.

    Matte Lipstick Studded Kiss£ 14.87

The most modern and durable party lip is red with a matt finish. But as these formulas can be unforgiving, treat lips an hour or two beforehand with a swipe of Aquaphor to melt away dry skin and prep the surface. Next, to get the perfect raspberry red, dab two matt MAC lipstick formulas on the back of your hand (Chili and Studded Kiss), then simply build the colour with your index finger until it’s bold and even. Clean the edges with a cotton bud dipped in cleanser. To keep the look glowy (not retro), avoid eyeliner. Instead, sweep lids with a shimmering nude shadow, then dab a shimmer cream in the centre of your lids. Finish with brown mascara.

    Canasta Gold-Tone Faux Pearl Hair Slide£ 60

Laura’s favourite party dresses are straight out of a (sparkly) fairy tale, so her hair needs to be simply finished with an undone texture. It should look like a quick-fix up-do – even though, in truth, looking this effortless requires a little more effort than simply raking it back. To achieve the look, blow-dry hair and then add the wave (or tame your curls) using a curling iron or narrow flat-iron. Use a texturising spray to ensure the kink stays, and then secure your hair in a low, loose pony. Use your fingers to loosen strands around your face, and then add a silk or velvet bow – the ultimate good-girl finishing touch.

    Phyto-Eye Twist 1 Topaze£ 33

As any make-up artist will tell you, the first step to gorgeous party skin is hydration. So treat yourself to a moisturising sheet mask an hour or so before you need to get ready. For flawless skin, conceal around the nose and under the eyes, as well as any red spots. Then apply a light-reflecting foundation and dab a cream blush onto the apples of cheeks (such as Bobbi Brown Glow Stick in Nude Beach). For the prettiest smoky eye, smooth a shimmery copper onto lids (Petro is wearing Sisley Phyto-Eye Twist in Topaze) and then add a brown pencil to upper lids. Finish with mascara.

    Treatment Masque£ 25

Petro gravitates towards more tailored pieces for parties, so she tends to go big and bouncy with her hair. The finished look should be sleek and shiny, but with a bit of movement. Prep for this look may begin days before the party if you have heat-damaged hair: a moisturising mask will make all the difference. You can double-condition the ends of dry hair too. On the day, use ceramic straightening irons to give hair that glossy, smooth finish. A large-barrel curling-iron will then give the ends bounce. Smooth a shine serum gently through hair for a high-gloss finish.
