The perfect in-between-seasons cardigan for us… is actually a coat. The most flattering designs mimic the silhouette of a winter coat, and may even have lapels and a belt, but come in a fine-knit wool. In a cool-weather neutral, such as charcoal, navy, burgundy or camel, this versatile coat will smarten up a casual outfit or dress down something that feels a little over the top. For instance, make a floral dress (with a few too many frills) more office-appropriate, or smarten up a chunky knit jumper and jeans for Sunday brunch.
Slipping your feet into loafers and boots after months of sandals and slides can be a rude shock. The perfect mid-season step-change is a closed-toe, slingback kitten heel. It looks elegant and smart, adds height without compromising on comfort, and is flattering on the legs. Rather than play it safe with a neutral, this is the perfect place to add colour to a smart daytime look. We’ll be buying at least one bold, fabric-covered pair this season, wearing them with everything from jeans to jumpsuits, and of course, pleated skirts and knits.
A long-sleeved printed dress is a great transeasonal buy – and the staple we always reach for when we’ve shivered our way through one too many bared-legged day. These dresses have the attitude of warmer times (all the prints), but with practical design elements (long sleeves, midi hemline) that make them an all-winter-long investment. Look for dark, moody blooms or graphic micro-florals in muted tones, and details like subtle frills, bib-detailing or a high neckline. We’ll be wearing ours with thick tights and a belted, oversized cardigan.
KEEP IT CLASSIC
You know we love a trench coat at Wardrobe ICONS. For one, we can be a little lazy and pulling on a mac (and walking elegantly out into the… drizzle) always looks polished. This is a staple that never, ever looks dated. And now is the time to wear it – when bare arms feel too chilly and winter coats too heavy. We make a trench work for all occasions: over a suit for work, evening dress at night, or loose and open over workout gear on the weekend. And while every season brings modern updates, we’re fans of a classic mac. It’s just so perfect, why mess with it?
Consider this your go-to look for days when the cooler weather and a summer-heavy wardrobe leaves you wondering how you left the house last autumn. Throw on a midi-length pleated skirt with a knitted jumper and trainers or closed-toe mules. For night, switch it up with colour-block pumps and statement earrings. This is the perfect way to show off the final days of your summer tan, in an outfit that implies you’re not in total denial about the season.
Dressing for the in-between seasons can feel like you’re stuck in the (fashion) Upside Down. But it doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are five ways to look stylish as the temperature drops and your wardrobe plays catch-up.
Over the years, we’ve learnt a few things about the style adjustment to cooler temps. One: we always fall back in love with our trench in September. Two: there are summer staples (this season, it’s pleated skirts) that work with small adjustments (psst, add knitwear). And three: autumn is the perfect time to update our wardrobe with one or two new items (hello, slingback kitten heels and a cardigan coat). Now if only we could remember where we stashed our tights.
