That I was in the ICONS office, doing the photo shoot for our ‘Laura Goes Corporate’ feature. I don’t wear corporate styles for my working week, but I had so much fun stepping into the shoes of those who do, and giving those smart staples a fashion-editor twist. We had a great reaction to the feature – so many of you told us how useful you found it.
Utility is something we are always thinking about, and recently we’ve conversed at length about what would be helpful now. As a result, this year’s back-to-work special looks a little different.
When we first flat-planned the issue, our main feature was going to be a guide to tailoring – a key look on the autumn/winter catwalks and a perennial work-wear favourite. However, with many of us still working from home, we decided to ask ourselves: “What are the new dressing-for-work essentials?” To offer some inspiration, each member of the team has shared one piece that they will be reaching for this September to keep them feeling professional and looking pulled-together. Find the edit on page 3.
I couldn’t be more excited about our cover star, Hannah Stoudemire. As the co-founder and CEO of Fashion For All Foundation, she works tirelessly to promote equality and diversity in fashion, and pushes the industry to action the changes it needs to make. She’s a force to be reckoned with and a true inspiration, so we were thrilled to (virtually) sit down with her and talk power, style and how we can all support positive change. Read Frankie’s interview with her on page 2.
Elsewhere in the issue, we’ve dedicated our handpicked edit to the new 9-5 must-haves: desktop upgrades, luxe WFH beauty products, stylish mood-boosters and smart home-office gadgets. We also shine a light on the bag we’re reaching for this September (think luxe, roomy designer totes) and celebrate the all-season dress – the perfect piece to take you from summer to autumn and beyond.
You’ll also see a new – but perhaps not unfamiliar – name on our beauty page; I’m delighted to introduce Monikh Dale as our contributing beauty editor. This summer, we made a promise to support and celebrate inclusivity in our pages and to do so in an authentic way. As we only ever feature beauty products tried and tested by the team, we asked Monikh to come on board and offer her expertise. Her personal belief of less is more and quality over quantity chimes perfectly with the ICONS ethos, and her true passion for beauty means she’s always got a recommendation up her sleeve. In her first Beauty Editor’s Pick monthly column, she shares the back-to-work products she relies on.
This is our first issue since we published our manifesto in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and it’s the start of putting into action the pledges we made to make ICONS, and the wider fashion industry, a place of equality and support. This is a lifetime commitment and one that we are dedicated to. For this reason, September feels more poignant than ever; it’s the start of a new season and the beginning of a better world.
We hope this issue is full of the inspiration you need to get back to work with a bang. The future starts here.
