    All Wrapped Up

If there’s one thing to celebrate about the turn of the season, it’s coats. Now’s the time to wrap up against chilly temperatures in cover-ups that will keep you feeling warm and looking chic. One of the hardest working categories in your wardrobe, outerwear needs to be carefully considered and smart investments made – which is where we come in. We wanted to use this shoot to showcase the styles we have tried, tested and truly believe in, to both refresh your coat repertoire and offer longevity. And having trialled many, these are the eight that get our seal of approval. We hope this expert edit gives you the confidence to buy with conviction, as well as offering a little styling inspiration along the way.

    The AM to PM Faux-Fur

“I consider faux fur the ultimate winter texture and love how it gives outfits tactility while offering high levels of warmth. It’s also the perfect 24-hour style, working just as well for daytime as evening. The first faux-fur style to invest in is leopard; however, if you already have that in your collection, reach for forest green, which acts like a neutral, pairing easily with autumnal tones.”

    The Every-Season Trench

“For me, the trench coat is the perfect example of the power of a classic – every time I reach for it, no matter whether I’m wearing my gym kit, an evening gown or something in-between, it makes me look and feel pulled together. This is a year-round style for me, so I never store it away; I’ll layer it with knitwear underneath for autumn, adding a faux-fur gilet over the top come winter.”

    The Colour-Pop Leather

“Usually when we consider leather coats, we think of tan or black; however, a colourful style is a clever way to inject wow-factor into your wardrobe. Layer over even the simplest outfit, to give it an entirely new lease of life.”

    The Tactile Teddy

“Teddy coats will always remind me of style icon Margot in The Royal Tenenbaums, and though a statement in themselves, their nod to retro acts as a classic counterpoint to fashion-forward outfits, such as this lilac jumpsuit. I love the slim cut, which doesn’t add bulk.”

    The Problem-Solving Quilted

“The heritage quilted jacket has been reinterpreted on this season’s catwalks and given a longer length for a contemporary feel. Lightweight and warm, consider this the ultimate solution for rain, wind and cold weather. I can imagine reaching for this on weekend walks and love the flattering fitted shape and high collar, which means no need for a scarf.”

    The Flattering Belted

“A long-time classic, the belted coat is having a real fashion moment this autumn and makes for one of this season’s most translatable trends. I love the flattering nipped waist and always feel chic when I wear mine (which is often). If you haven’t already, now’s the time to make an investment. Alternatively, try adding a leather belt to an existing coat in your collection for an instant refresh.”

    The Instant-Chic Camel

“Every season we champion camel coats, and with very good reason; having been established as a classic in the 1980s, they are timeless. What’s more, the warm neutral hue is flattering, versatile and makes any outfit feel immediately chic. Put simply, a camel coat is an investment you will never regret making.”

    The Repeat-Wear Wrap

“I think a wrap coat is among the most flattering outerwear silhouettes and can be worn over every type of outfit. If, like me, you already own a few in classic shades (I have black, grey and tan), consider bottle green. Adding a splash of colour to your coat repertoire, it also delivers on versatility, working with autumnal shades from mustard to burgundy and ensuring repeat wear.”
