  • Funmi Fetto’s Joy-Sparking Edit

There are few people we trust more for beauty insights than author and journalist Funmi Fetto, who is beauty director of the Observer Magazine, contributing editor at British Vogue and the author of Palette, a book curating the products that women of colour should have on their radar. To follow, she shares an edit of the nine beauty formulas in her daily regimen that spark joy.

    By Funmi Fetto

    Gucci Beauty

Poudre De Beauté Éclat Soleil – 05£46

“Bronzers are not something I bothered with in the past. I rarely came across brands that created shades dark enough or with the right undertones to suit my skin. Gucci was the first I fell in love with because it actually works. And the eau de nil compact and brush are pure joy.”

    Scacco Otto Scented Candle£165

“This Fornasetti candle is a glorious objet d’art, but also smells exquisite. The unusual notes – lavender, thyme, cedarwood and orris – are a dream for anyone with a penchant for sweet, smoky scents or the fragrance of a traditional library. It’s rather apt that it sits on the fireplace in my home office, next to some of my favourite books.”

Eau de Parfum – Eau Capitale£125

“Anyone who loves Portrait of a Lady, by Frederic Malle, would love this unabashedly sexy, sultry but super-chic scent by Diptyque. It is utterly irresistible. I began wearing it as soon as it launched in 2019, and friends, family and colleagues that smelt it on me proceeded to go out and buy it immediately. Easily my favourite Diptyque scent.”

    Allies of Skin

Prebiotics & Niacinamide Pore Refining Booster£65

“While I understand the benefits of layering skincare products, a consistent 10-15-step beauty regime never ends well. Hence, I rate Allies of Skin’s understated approach. This product refines skin texture, protects the skin barrier, brightens and hydrates. I’m slightly obsessed with how my complexion looks after using this booster; light literally bounces off it.”

G.Tox Malachite and Fruit Extracts Purifying Cleanser£44

“Goop skincare is so underrated. I remember being so thrilled at discovering this cleanser – it is so brilliant that I find myself looking forward to cleansing my face every morning and evening. It is that good and smells amazing. If you are suffering from acne or lockdown-induced breakouts, I wholeheartedly recommend this.”

    U Beauty

    Resurfacing Compound£138

“Every so often, something launches in beauty that is practical, innovative and a dream to use, like this formula from U Beauty. It combines numerous ingredients – retinol, vitamin C and antioxidants among them – that do myriad things to your skin (such as brightening and smoothing), without any irritation. The results are incredible. And quick. It makes for a super-satisfying skincare routine.”

    Body Hero Daily Oil Wash£15

“If I could use one body cleanser for the rest of my life, I think it would be this oil wash from Glossier. The scent is magnificent (orange blossom and neroli), the texture is an oil that turns slightly milky and frothy on contact with water, and it leaves you feeling super-clean but equally hydrated. I am almost embarrassed to admit just how many bottles I have been through in recent months. It’s addictive. In a good way.”

    Eye Serum£105

“I love this eye serum. Epara is an incredible luxe skincare line created for darker skin tones, a demographic that has long been ignored by the beauty industry. Seeing efficacious, beautifully made products that speak to people who look like me gives me a great feeling.”

+ NET SUSTAIN Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash£27

“Hand-washing was once about pragmatism. Now, of course, it has a much deeper significance. Using a wonderfully therapeutic, scented wash, like this one from Aesop, turns a pedestrian act into something much more pleasurable.”
