Historically, this has always been our events issue – the one where we share our edits for garden parties and other annual blow-outs. And, yes, as someone who loves to get dressed up and have fun, when we can go out, I will party as hard as this 40-year-old body will let me. But I’ve been feeling a little reflective lately, and I really can say that the last year has taught me there are other things that make me feel just as good. Like exercise, for example – I am now a firm believer in the endorphin rush that comes with a great workout, and the mental strength and sense of wellbeing it gives me.
If there’s one person who embodies this sentiment, it’s our cover star Tracy Anderson, and with 10-16 May being Mental Awareness Week in the UK (it’s also Mental Health Awareness Month in the US), it seemed an apt time to speak to her. Tracy’s fitness programme has always promoted the power of strong minds and bodies, pioneering the idea that we can find joy and community together, one endorphin-boosting workout at a time.
We’ve also got a round-up of guest edits, from a handful of talented women who spark joy in our lives. There’s Lisou designer Rene Macdonald, whose colourful prints and gorgeous clothes always make us feel good; Anissa Kermiche, whose statement homewares celebrate the female form and never fail to make me smile; the maker of the only pair of shoes we really ever need for a summer holiday, creative director of Ancient Greek Sandals, Christina Martini; and, finally, interior designer Beata Heuman, whose work is a masterclass in how to create rooms that make us feel happy.
Another thing that’s bringing me so much joy is the fact that summer really is just around the corner now (when I said it in January, it was harder to believe). So, I’ve put together an edit of pieces for the table and for you, to make al-fresco suppers feel even more special, while Laura has the outfits for outdoor gatherings of all kinds. Ava is briefing us on the very best SPFs to protect our skin from all the sunshine we’ll soon be basking in. Then there’s travel… and I’m sure you’ll agree that the thrill of visiting new locations is real. As such, Laura is sharing the first of many packing lists – for this issue, a capsule edit of everything you need for a seaside staycation. If you’d like more inspiration, don’t miss our fashion editor Florence’s edit of warm-weather combos: shorts & spring knits, and skirt co-ords.
Finally, with summer comes the desire to see a healthy-looking reflection in the mirror. And so, Laura and I have been testing gradual self-tanners, to bring you the best formulas for a natural, sun-kissed glow. I’m pretty sure there is actual science to prove its mood-elevating powers. It certainly made me feel good!
I hope this issue is just one of the things that lifts your spirits this week.
