Le Scuderie sits on the picturesque Villa di Masseto estate, in the small Tuscan village of Lubaco, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Florence. Once home to the farm’s horses, the traditional house has undergone a total renovation to restore it to its former 16th-century splendour and transform it into a luxurious and comfortable countryside retreat, with stylish interiors and beautiful grounds.
With room for up to six guests, the property has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and two spacious living areas split over two floors. We loved the kitchen/diner, which opens on to the pretty garden via terrace doors, for easy inside/outside living, which allowed us to prepare meals with all the family. The kitchen is fully equipped with hob, oven and fridge-freezer – perfect for preparing local dishes like panzanella and fettunta, a Florentine take on bruschetta. Throughout the house, original terracotta floors and wooden beams are artfully combined with mid-century-modern furnishings, making for a chic yet homely interior.
Outside, the spacious grounds have several seating options: poolside loungers, an al-fresco dining table, and comfortable sofas for aperitivo hour. The bamboo-trimmed swimming pool was a hit with the entire family and is big enough for doing laps and splashing around in. From the garden you can also admire a panorama of the valley, which is studded with tall Tuscan cypress trees – the perfect view to enjoy while sipping a Campari at sunset. You can also explore the estate’s ancient family chapel, which is still consecrated.
We spent most evenings eating fresh salads and pastas on the terrace, but there is a very good restaurant called Dino, five minutes’ drive from the house, which has amazing views over Florence and the surrounding hills. In the small village of Santa Brigida you will find a grocery shop and a couple of nice bars. The ancient city of Fiesole is about 15 minutes’ drive away and is also a great spot for dinner with a view.
