September – aka fashion’s new year – has long been a time of sartorial excitement as new trends are ushered in, and with them, a refreshed point of view on getting dressed every morning. However, after the subdued style credentials of the past year, this September I am especially ready to embrace the thrill of the new season and every delight it has to offer.
So, where do we start? Though the AW21 catwalk shows didn’t follow their usual fashion-month format, they were still a source of style inspiration, with designers offering clever takes on classic pieces and putting forward modern ideas that play to contemporary life. In our biannual report, we’ve selected the trends to take note of, sharing intelligent ways to tap into them using pieces you already have.
While effortless is our watchword, there are occasions when a trend that might initially appear tricky is worth getting your head around. In this issue’s Unexpected Hero feature, we share the outerwear benefits of the cape, while in my Style Sheet, I show you four chic ways to wear high-shine vinyl. And because getting new-season ready really doesn’t need to cost a lot, we’ve handpicked the 10 best under-£190 autumn buys.
Elsewhere, Petro and I share the seasonal staples we’re currently reaching for, Florence picks the best-in-class new-season forever bags, and queen of cashmere, Madeleine Thompson tells us what’s on her hotlist.
Speaking of Madeleine Thompson, we’re so excited to reveal our latest exclusive, the Madeleine Thompson x W.ICONS jumpsuit. A labour of love, we’ve been secretly working on this design over the summer and are delighted to have created what we believe to be the perfect knitted jumpsuit; think straight-legged, balloon-sleeved, in a classic navy cashmere blend. We hope you love it as much as we do.
Finally, if you’re looking for an instant hit of newness, Ava has the low-down on the AW21 lip looks to try. From statement to subtle, there’s something to suit every style and occasion.
Here’s to the new season. Enjoy!
