This edition of The Icons Update is dedicated to brilliant basics. Those wear-on-repeat items that prop up the rest of your wardrobe and can be reached for in any and every event. These are the pieces that Wardrobe ICONS is built on. Our ethos has always been intelligent, forever style that works for everyday life, and that starts with the right foundations. We believe that with the perfect-fit T-shirt, on-point tailoring, just-so denim, classic trench coat etc, you’ll never come unstuck when finding something to wear.
We couldn’t think of anyone better to place on the cover of this issue than Leah Chapman. The former graphic designer founded Issue Twelve, a British-based brand dedicated to crafting beautiful, easy-to-wear wardrobing essentials with a sustainable mindset. Every piece is created using responsible processes and fabrics, and Leah’s eye for minimal, timeless design ensures they are guaranteed to be worn for years to come. We visited her at home to find out more about her label and take a look inside her own wardrobe.
Of course, style is a very personal thing and not everyone’s basics are the same. Laura and I are cases in point. Though we are both committed to the benefits of foundations, our capsules look different, as you’ll see on page 4 and 5, where we’ve put together our edits of must-haves.
For those looking to build up their own collection of essentials, Frankie has profiled the designers and brands that specialise in creating perfect basics. From the Italian label that masters tailoring, to the smart-price destination with the best T-shirts, you’ll find them all in our ICONS Guide.
Whatever your style, we’d highly recommend adding a boyfriend blazer to your daily rotation. We tell you why in the latest Style Sheet, and show four ways to wear it for day, night, work and weekend. And, if you’re in need of some in-between-weather dressing inspiration, Florence shares the best spring blouse and jeans pairings – our go-to trans-seasonal uniform. Speaking of uniform, this issue’s Unexpected Hero is in celebration of utility wear, a forever trend that features heavily in our wardrobes and deserves to be shouted about.
And finally, because finding the best basics doesn’t just apply to our wardrobes, we’ve used our Beauty Focus page to spotlight our favourite everyday cleansers – the ultimate beauty essential.
We hope you enjoy the issue and that you find it full of helpful tips for constructing your own collection of foundations. As with most things in life, when you get the basics right, the rest will follow.
