    Ed’s Letter

Back-to-work season always makes me excited…

I am continually surprised by how much I enjoy packing away swimsuits and dresses at the end of the summer and turning my thoughts to the season ahead. The beginning of September feels like a fresh start, not least for our wardrobes. Now’s the time to consider autumnal staples, office uniforms and those key investments that will take you through the new season and beyond. So while you might have a case of the post-holiday blues, I hope that this issue will have you looking forward to what’s to come.

Our cover star is the brilliant Caroline Issa. Caroline has been a supporter of W.ICONS from the very beginning (in fact, she was one one of our early covers), so it’s with great pleasure that we welcome her back. As chief executive and fashion director of Tank magazine, editor of becauselondon.com and a luxury brand consultant, Caroline is an example of true industry talent and prolific work ethic. She’s also one of the kindest people I know and rocks a suit like no other. Petro spent the day shooting her in and around her offices as she shared her working wardrobe for the months ahead. Turn to page 2 for more.

At ICONS HQ we spend every day searching for the very best of the best in every wardrobe category. For this issue’s ICONS Guide, we wanted to share that knowledge in relation to the working wardrobe. Frankie and I have compiled a list of the eight brands that each excel in one smart staple, from modern tailoring to perfectly cut shirts and boardroom dresses. Think of it as your little black book of workwear to refer back to whenever your 9-5 uniform needs a refresh.

Speaking of updaters, if you haven’t yet, now’s the time to rediscover your chunky loafers. The preppy classic is under the fashion spotlight this season and has never felt more relevant. We have everything you need to know about this unexpected hero on page 7. As for what to wear them with? It has to be our perfect pairing – suits and T-shirts. This high/low outfit typifies the modern workwear mood. As an expert in the look, Petro has found the chicest combinations, whatever your suit style.

Every working wardrobe needs an immaculate blazer, and Blazé Milano is the gold standard. A master in the art of the tailored jacket, everything from the fabric to the fit is spot on – if you’ve ever tried one on, you’ll know what I mean. The Resolute blazer is my big investment for the season ahead, so I wanted to showcase the multiple ways of wearing it in our Style Sheet. I know I’ll still be wearing mine when I’m 80.

Back by popular demand is our handpicked edit of The Classics. The perfect trench, the wide jeans, the timeless Breton, the forever tote – we’ve searched high and low for the staples that will prop up your new season wardrobe. We also shine a light on Varana, a new brand discovery that has really impressed us with its ethos of blending traditional artisan crafts with contemporary, wearable design. I’m looking forward to wearing the fringed cashmere skirt this autumn.

Finally, we’ve teamed up with our dear friends at Otiumberg on an exclusive competition to win a £750 shopping voucher. I’ve known sisters Rosanna and Christie for over 10 years and have loved watching their brand grow. My own jewellery box is full of their timeless pieces. Head to page 9 to enter – good luck!

The relaxed cut of this trouser suit gives a laid-back yet smart look. I’ll layer it with a classic T-shirt.

I really can’t wear heels anymore, so a pair of polished loafers will be my 9-5 staples.

This little stud will go into my new ear piercing to give my workwear looks extra cool factor.
