As the temperature drops, layering up makes a lot of sense. Not only does it keep you warm, it’s a clever way of making the most of your winter wardrobe. But stylish layering is so much more than simply placing one piece on top of the other. In fact, it’s an art form.
To help you master it, we’ve broken the chicest layering formulas down to their simplest forms. Whether wrapping up for the office or dressing for dinner, these are the practical and aesthetically pleasing ways to stay cosy all season long.
BLAZER + OVERCOAT
Double jacketing (aka wearing one outerwear piece over another) is one of the smartest cold-weather styling tips going and works best when layering an overcoat over a blazer. The trick is to make sure your coat is roomy enough to fit a blazer underneath, so reach for loose-cut styles. This is also a clever way of layering up lighter-weight blazers and trench coats for the autumn.
GILET + KNITS
A gilet is the layer to reach for when it’s not quite cold enough for a full coat but you need a little extra insulation. Think of this as the piece to wear over the top of chunky knitwear or dresses and blouses with statement sleeves that would struggle to fit under a coat. Reach for quilted or shearling styles to give outfits stylish texture.
The preppy twin set is back, but with a twist. The modern way to wear it is to drape the outer piece around your shoulders, wrapping the arms around your neck or knotting them at the front. Opt for plain knits in matching or similar tones that complement the rest of your outfit. This is an easy way to stay warm and add interest to plain trousers and skirts.
KNITTED VEST + SHIRT
If you find you’re not reaching for your shirts this season, the chances are it’s because they’re too lightweight. Simply layering a knitted vest over the top gives them the necessary warmth to become repeat-wear pieces. Think about fits; a slim shirt works underneath a shrunken vest, while a relaxed shirt needs a vest with a slouchy cut. Layer a knitted vest over the top of T-shirts to take them into autumn, too.
ROLL NECK + BUTTON DOWN
This season, consider a roll neck the fashion-forward vest. Layer it underneath classic button-down shirts, making sure the high neck is visible. Ensure you don’t add bulk by choosing super-fine roll necks made from smooth, non-itchy fabrics and with long sleeves. A neutral colour will work under most shirts, or go for a bright style to add a pop of colour to your look.
SILK DRESS + SLOUCHY JUMPER
This high/low style note will make the most of your silk slips. Simply layer a relaxed-fit jumper over the top for everyday wear – just add boots. For informal evenings switch boots to a pair of low heels and add statement earrings. Keep the look luxe by styling your dress with a jumper in the same tone. Go for a knit in cashmere or premium wool.
