Issue 248: Ed's Letter

by

Welcome to the second instalment of the ICONS party special…

I’m particularly excited about this issue because it features a first for us – our debut fashion story with a model. Usually, our shoots feature Petro and I, however we wanted this one to be a move away from our personal aesthetic and instead represent ideas that every single ICONS woman reading this can identify with. We know how hard our wardrobes need to work at the moment – with times as they are, everything we buy is more of a commitment. So, we wanted to put together a thoughtful capsule of party pieces from trusted brands that can be worn again and again for many years to come and will always feel special. Whether you’re a dress devotee or suit lover, I hope you find something to fall in love with.

Have you thought about going sheer this season? This unexpected evening look is one I’m very invested in, thanks to the chic transparent pieces around at the moment. Think of them as a clever way to update your after-dark classics. Find out how on page 5.

We also wanted to shine a light on the smart-price pieces that will add pizzazz to your existing party wardrobe. From the go-with-everything platforms to the ultimate red evening bag, turn to page 3 for our savvy finds. And because the right make-up is as much a part of party dressing as the clothes, we’ve asked beauty and style expert Lesley Buckle – aka Fresh Lengths – to share her evening beauty essentials.

Elsewhere, you’ll find our interview with Brett Heyman, the designer behind iconic bag brand Edie Parker. Brett’s playfully statement acrylic clutches have become synonymous with party style, and her own aesthetic is just as exuberant. When we travelled to New York in the autumn, we were delighted to be invited into her beautiful apartment to take a look around her wardrobe and shoot her favourite evening looks. Turn to page 6 for all the dressing up inspiration you need.

I’ll always be a fan of a party dress, but this year my go-to party look is a suit. The versatility of smart separates feels extra covetable right now. For our ICONS Guide, we’ve picked the extra-special suits (plus the evening co-ords if suits aren’t your thing) that we believe will provide endless outfit options. And for the magpies among us, our senior contributing fashion editor, Des, shares four wearable ways to style the showstopper of the season, sequin trousers.

Also in the issue, we’ve compiled the top 10 accessories that work for every party dress code – including my favourite Grace velvet clutch – and found the sparkly shoes that take your LBD up a notch. Plus, we spotlight heritage fine jewellers Pragnell (if you’re looking for that extra special finishing touch, here’s were to find it) and pick the brains of interiors expert and designer Matilda Goad, to find out which hosting pieces are on her festive wish list.

Wishing you the happiest of party seasons!
