The first thing to consider when investing in a designer bag is which gap of your wardrobe (if any) it’s going to fill: are you after a compact cross body weekender, a smart work bag or perhaps a large everyday tote? Once you’ve answered this question, stick to your answer as this will narrow down style, size and colour choices. Don’t expect one bag to be able to tick every box – buy each one for a purpose. Over time build a capsule wardrobe of individual bags that will each suit a specific occasion in your life.
Fact: designer bags are expensive. If you have taken the decision to pay £700 upwards for your next handbag, you want to make sure you will not only use it a lot but also for a long time. When allocating a budget, think cost-per-wear: a £2,000 bag worn for roughly three months over five years works out at £4 per wear (I tell my husband that this is the cost of one pint of beer in London!). A LV bag is undoubtedly a substantial investment, but one that you are likely to pass on for generations, so take that into consideration.
Let’s not forget that designer “boutiques” and “maisons” are essentially just shops; so don’t be intimidated by the formal environment and staff, if anything use them to your advantage. The loveliest man served me; he knew everything there was to know about each and every bag. Describe what you are looking for and be upfront about your budget; this will help them provide you with suitable options.
To invest or not to invest?
I’ve been told that designer tiles will “totally elevate the look of my bathroom”, so I can then save on taps and paint and achieve the polished look of an interior magazine. True or not, this theory certainly applies to handbags: invest in a designer bag and not only you will wear it over and over again, but it will inevitably give a certain air to your Topshop jeans and J. Crew T-shirt uniform.
