We have a penchant for a glitzy sort of glamour this time of year. And you don’t need to be a good-time party girl to pull it off. Sequins are grown-up and very cool, especially when you play them down a little with unexpected basics. Beyond their obvious solution as perfect party gear, there are so many reasons to embrace a little sparkle: it instantly perks you up, offers a respite from more classic (yawn) eveningwear, and it feels like party armour. You just cannot wear sequins and not have fun. We dare you to try.
The secret to sophisticated sequins is two-fold: first, look for a demure style, like this chic midi-length dress with long sleeves. Second, steer clear of the usual gold and silver for a fashionable neutral like forest green, which goes with so many colours. And then offset the sensible style of the dress with fun accessories: in this case, pom-poms and bows add a hint of playfulness to the outfit.
We love nothing more than a classic silhouette with an unexpected twist, like these sparkly, statement trousers, which have a flattering, relaxed fit. Tuck in a crisp white button-down shirt, but roll the sleeves up and open the collar so the overall vibe is effortless. Then add festive earrings (these babies are on our wish list) and swipe on a matt red lip.
As a general rule, style this skirt like you would a pair of jeans to keep the look cool. For us, that means switching out heels for flats, such as these pointy mules, which already make this a seriously comfortable party proposition. On top, a cashmere tee or something just as minimal like a cropped-sleeve knit, works well. Keep your hair and make-up pared back, too.
We love this powdery pink, vintage-feeling colour and flirty dress. The long sleeves and tasteful frills make it our dream mini for winter parties, as it’s just as elegant as it is fun. The dress is such a statement that it only takes embellished flats and a hair slide to complete the look.
