Stay cool and calm in the city, with these easy style solutions. From mules to woven bags to printed trousers, we’ve found seven simple ways for you to hit refresh on your summer look.
TUCK SHIRTS INTO YOUR SKIRTS
At Wardrobe ICONS, we love nothing more than a crisp shirt tucked into a statement skirt. The top half is all business; the bottom-half is fun, stylish and just a little attention-seeking. Keep the look fresh with one of this season’s printed midi-length styles. Or why not breathe a longer shelf-life into embellished or structured skirts that you usually save for after dark. When it comes to your shirt, keep it tailored but with a relaxed fit. Roll the cuffs. Undo the top button. And finish with anything from classic pointed pumps to block-heel mules.
BAG AN UPSCALE BASKET
Natural bags have the power to give any outfit a summer spin. You may not be in Ibiza, but your woven bag is there in spirit. To keep the look city-slick, find a style that has structure. While oversized basket totes are a little too beachy, anything with a top-handle or detailed with leather or gold hardware instantly looks more polished. And these upscale woven wonders will freshen up everything from a cocktail dress to jeans and a tee, making them a versatile addition to your wardrobe.
EMBRACE EARTHY SHADES
One of the sharpest ways to dress this summer is in head-to-toe shades of the earth-loving variety. Think terracotta, rust, deep brown and camel – while slightly tough to pull off in isolation, combined they look super-chic. Gravitate towards slightly more feminine and elegant shapes, like camisoles and maxi skirts, or sleek dresses under long, lightweight coats. The beauty of this palette is that you can really go to town with textures, layering satin, crisp cotton and sheer, light fabrics, always set against smart, black accessories.
SLIP INTO A SIMPLE DRESS WITH BUTTONS
The lovechild of a kaftan and shirt dress, the new guard of buttoned-up dresses are an elegant solution for summer in the city. Beautifully simple, look for utilitarian details like long cuffs, obvious stitching and side pockets. The palette should be equally pared back – opt for fresh neutrals like white, tan or navy. And size up so you nail that laid-back vibe that says you’re totally fine working through August. Should you make a break for it, we love that this style works as well for cocktail hour, with elegant slides and cat’s-eye frames, as it does for the poolside, accessorised with gold hoops and sandals.
TRY PRINTED TROUSERS
We’ve recently discovered this surprising transformer and we’re converts. In fact, printed trousers have become one of the hardest-working and most-complimented pieces in our wardrobe. The trick here is fit. The silhouette should be super-relaxed – either loose-fit with a drawstring or breezy palazzo pants. Then, style them as if they were a neutral. They play nicely with urban basics like a denim jacket and box-fresh trainers. But equally, pairing them with a block-colour blouse and kitten heels (in a clashing colour) will lend the look a modern edge.
SUIT UP WITH A TEE
This one is as simple as it is brilliant. When it’s humid, the shirt and jacket combination is just too stuffy, while lighter fabrics and shorter sleeves make the look infinitely more comfortable. And cooler, sartorially speaking, too. Breathe new life into a statement suit, like this gorgeous yellow one, with a scoop-neck cotton t-shirt in white or black. Some of our most beloved T-shirts are from J.Crew, Iris Fashion and Isabel Marant Etoile.
MULES, ALWAYS AND ANYWHERE
There was a time when mules were more of a comfy, weekend option. Well, they’ve graduated to elevated daytime status, giving kitten heels a run for their money. The best styles have a block heel and closed toe, possibly with some woven detailing or an elegant finish like soft suede, which is especially good for day-to-night dressing. Surprisingly, one of the most wearable options is bright white, which goes with just about everything we own. It may be particularly on-point for this summer, but we predict this is a look with staying power.
