  • Vitamin C

You may have noticed a fashionable boom in all products vitamin C-related recently – from face washes to creams and serums, there is something for everyone. Vitamin C is not only necessary for collagen production, but it’s also a potent antioxidant that can neutralise free radicals in the skin, helping to reduce the signs of ageing. Ageing causes a decline in the skin’s vitamin C content, so which products can we use to boost our complexion? Our editors put four to the test.

Laura: ‘I first became interested in anti-ageing products while I was breastfeeding my second baby and noticed a substantial decline in the quality of my skin. I sought the advice of a dermatologist and vitamin C was one of the first thing she prescribed. For over a year now I’ve been rigorously applying skin drops every morning to clean skin and I’m not only totally addicted to the results, but super-interested in finding ways I can absorb more of this potent antioxidant. Lixir Vitamin C Paste is part of the streamlined, “less is more” range of six products developed by  Colette Haydon. It’s a wash-off treatment containing 10% ascorbic acid which is activated when you wet it. Every morning, warm a pea-sized blob of paste in the palm of clean hands and apply to your face, eye contour, lips, neck and décolletage. Massage with damp fingers, leave for a few minutes and rinse with a clean towel. The tingly sensation is refreshing and my skin is noticeably more vibrant and luminous.’

    Resist C15 Super Booster
    Paula’s Choice£45

Deborah: ‘I love using vitamin C masks in the week to give my skin a brightening boost, but my preference is to use a little bit every day. Paula’s Choice Resist C15 Super Booster can be used day or night, or even twice a day. Its combination of 15% vitamin C, vitamin E oil and ferulic acid improves the signs of photodamage, the appearance of fine lines and the loss of skin firmness, as well as protecting from free radicals. The consistency feels like an oil but is lighter and absorbs quickly into my skin. Use after cleansing and before moisturising. This isn’t an overnight cure, but after three months you will notice the difference.’

    FlashMud Brightening Treatment

Carrie: ‘Glamglow FlashMud Brightening Treatment Mask is a miracle worker for my skin – and I would highly recommend it for an effective instant skin boost. With multiple derivatives of potent vitamin C and other powerful ingredients, the treatment promises to provide you with “luminous, perfect, sexy skin”. After using the mask for the recommended three days in a row, followed by weekly treatments, I have seen remarkable results. This wonderful concoction not only brightens, but also lightens even my most stubborn, sun-damaged areas of skin pigmentation.’

    C E Ferulic Serum
    SkinCeuticals£135

Petro: ‘We all use this serum, it’s super-effective and when it comes to high-potency vitamin C you will struggle to get a better over-the-counter product. I have been using it religiously for the past two months and I can see a visible difference to my skin – it looks like I have been on holiday and I have a healthy glow. I have even been accused of regular fake tan sessions! It’s expensive but you only need a couple of drops per application, so a little goes a long way. Apply it in the morning after cleansing and before your usual moisturiser. You’ll find the serum slightly tacky on the skin to start with, but it seeps in quickly and doesn’t leave a residue so it’s a perfect base for under foundation.’
