The Skirt Masterclass

THE WRAP SKIRT

There aren’t many pieces in my wardrobe that I can adjust every time I wear them so the fit is perfect: perhaps that’s why wrap skirts hold a special place in my fashion-loving heart. My top tip is to always size up. That way you avoid the dreaded slit (when there’s not enough fabric to give you the right coverage) and you'll get the fit just right. Wear it with something relaxed on top and always tuck for the most flattering silhouette.

THE UTILITY SKIRT

This trustworthy style is the one my colleagues see me in most often. For me, a utility skirt is the chino pants of the skirt world, which means it provides endless outfit combinations. Pair it with a simple white t-shirt and trainers for everyday, or tonal shades to upgrade the look. And consider accessories: utility pieces work best when you add a little personality. Here, I added studded loafers (and my beloved check trench).

THE PRINTED SKIRT

Take a peek in my wardrobe and you’ll be overwhelmed by floral prints, which border on being an obsession of mine. This season, I’m reaching for archive prints that almost feel like old wallpaper. For me, the reason these have real longevity is because there's already something so nostalgic about them. When I wear a printed skirt, I usually keep everything else pared-back. Here, I reached for my faded denim jacket and trainers.

THE STATEMENT MAXI

Easy to whip on and providing endless possibilities for day or night, a statement maxi has never let me down. To conquer the day, slides, a black tee and tote get the job done. For night I’d stick with a flat shoe, but add a pretty silk blouse in a matching or contrasting print. Like I said, easy and so simple to transform. Plus, I love that a flowing maxi will always fit and flatter, especially on those days when I want a look that covers all the lumps and bumps.

THE DENIM SKIRT

When it comes to effortless, nothing beats a denim skirt. For me, it always needs that 70s feel, meaning A-line, dark denim and the super-flattering maxi length. And that’s because when you tick all those boxes, you have the most versatile look. This style can look super-smart, or just as easily be casual. Here, I’ve paired it with an old favourite khaki shirt and block heels, which is my workday sweet spot. I wouldn’t shy away from double denim here either: the trick is to match the shade as closely as you can, which will look sharper than contrasting shades.

THE ASYMMETRIC SKIRT

I’ve always had very clear ideas about what suits me, and what doesn’t. And because of that, I have tended to steer clear of ruffled skirts with asymmetric hemlines, assuming they add too much bulk to my bottom half. This Preen skirt converted me. The silhouette is so flattering and the design shows a little leg while still looking demure. It's easy to elevate with basics from my wardrobe (just add blazer, cotton blouse and strappy sandals) for night, but I happily wear it with trainers and a denim jacket for a brunch date.
