Inside the Ibiza Wardrobe of Deborah Brett

When it comes to destination dressing, our friend and collaborator Deborah Brett is in a class of her own. She unapologetically embraces themes, happily matching her outfits to her (now famous) blue-and-white encaustic tiles and has a black-belt in stacking bangles, beads and charms. Perhaps our favourite thing about DB’s personal style is that she embraces and expresses joy with every look to puts on. The silhouettes she opts for are always effortless and timeless—but playful too. And what you see is what you get—she is every bit as friendly and energetic in person as her outfits project. And if you want a masterclass is how accessories make the the outfit, you’ve landed on the right page. To follow, the stylish wardrobe of our very own ICONS girl, DB.

"I had these wardrobes made by a local carpenter. I love the exterior detail detail made from bamboo and oak with leather loop handles. We come throughout the year so I have everything from summer dresses and bikinis to jeans and cashmere here. There is loads of blue and white, I can't help but match my home."

"I'm definitely a bikini girl and have drawers filled with bandeau bikinis (I cant bear strap marks). Favourites are from Marysia, Bodas and Hunza G. but I've also started to wear swimsuits. I love Tara Matthews who adds a layer of control mesh into hers which nips in the waist, and Cossie + Co's simple silhouettes with double-layered fabric are so elegant."

"Most of my wardrobe is filled with beautiful summer dresses, sandals, embellished jewellery and bags that I have collected over the years. It's a greatest hits of everything I have bought and continue to cherish. If you want to have a tidy home and a ridiculous collection of shoes, storage is key! I did something very similar to my home in London and turned dead spaces into storage drawers. I added drawers where you would normally put the skirting to house my numerous sandals and flip flops. I lay them stacked side by side to fit more in!"

"I've always loved dressing my girls in similar outfits. I never had a sister and always wished I could have done the same. There are a few labels who have added a matching outfit for mums into the mix too, and my girls adore this. Seraphina does this beautifully, using the same fabric but altering the shapes. Mine is edged in cherries and the girls have hearts on the bottom of theirs. Catherine Prevost also does fantastic bold florals for mums and daughters and Dilli Grey's block printed dresses from India are light and breezy and perfect for summer."

"When I first started coming to Ibiza no-one dressed up. You would go out in a beach dress or kaftan with some flip flops, but things have definitely become more glamorous since then. Ibiza has a bohemian vibe and this suits my style perfectly. I would still never wear heels here, but I love a bold printed dress and lots and lots of beads and layered jewellery. More is definitely more here!"

"Most of my jewellery stays here on the island. When I come out I like to travel with a few new pieces, like a dress and sandals, but most of my pieces here are very beachy and bohemian and feel more at home here than in the city."

"I'm living in this olive green swimsuit at the moment. And I love having fun with my accessories too. Born in the Sun has made these glamorous yet practical towelling head bands and I layer up beads and necklaces or shell earrings to coordinate with my swimwear."

"This dress has become one of my all time favourites. Every time I wear it I get stopped and complimented. I think it's because of the striking colour combination, and also the silk parachute fabric is so light and fluid it moves so elegantly. The British designer Anna Mason does a range of ready to wear as well, but when I bought this, she only did made-to-order and I could choose what colour and length I wanted. She's designing me some very special dresses for a big celebration we are having here later in the year. This swing is one of my favourite places to sit. I discovered it at Serena and Lily on a trip to the Hamptons and became obsessed. It's so comfy and I often sit here before breakfast with a cup of coffee and a child snuggling into me or at night with my husband and a glass of wine listening to the sea. The grass lampshade is from my favourite interiors shop here on the island called Can Castello and the designer Hubert Zandberg found me this traditional skirt wrap from the Mossi Tribe in Burkina Faso and had it framed."

"This nest of three porcelain bowls were made by me. I've always loved creating and the process of making. My alternate Instagram @dbceramic showcases all the things I make. These are Mazarin blue bubble glaze and edged in 24k gold and are as light as a feather. I love gold jewellery and beads. The blue eye bracelet is from one of my favourite new designers Brinker and Eliza. The blue beads are by Carolina Bucci. You can choose what colours you want and Hove to change mine according to my outfit. My rope ring by Sophie Keegan Baum is so tactile. As are my gold bangles by the Australian designer Lucy Folk, who uses food to inspire her work. These are her anchovy and dough bangles. Missoma's new Momposina collection inspired by Colombia is my new summer favourite. Her gold Baya hoops go with everything."

"I had one long shallow drawer made in my cupboard. Half to house my underwear and belts and the other half for my jewellery. I love to see my jewellery on display, ready to pick and mix. As this is a beach house, I opted for small hand woven boxes and bowls to contain them. One has bracelets, the other rainbow beads, the other earrings. Like my dresses and my swimwear, my jewellery has been lovingly collected throughout the years. Some pieces come from my travels around the world as a fashion editor, others are hand made by me - shells and beads strung onto leather or designed by friends."

"Flat sandals have also become more flamboyant: I bought these bow slides by Brother's Vellies at Los Enamorados a few years ago and have since picked up a pair in speckled sand linen from Koi Bird and pale blue stripe just now in the Matchesfashion sale. They are so irreverent. And definitely add to my maximalist way of accessorising. I also adore A Piedi's bow slides which are less casual and more elegant but just as comfy, and Ancient Greek Sandals for the odd moment when I'm feeling a less is more approach."

"This shirt and skirt from Boden immediately jumped out at me. I love inky indigo and the way I can make these pieces work in so many different ways, separated with jeans, or a crisp white shirt and denim jacket. This pool area has really been transformed from when we first bought the house. It was a very traditional turquoise tiled pool with cracked terracotta tiles surrounding it. It took forever to decide on the right tiles, but we finally arrived at the idea of using travertine stone. In the 70s my dad's office walls were covered in it and I loved that it brought memories of him. It has a very slight roughness to it to stop kids slipping and they take on the colour of the sand under the sea, so the pool is a very calming aqua. The sun beds are rough planks of pine, on which I had a local upholsterer make thick comfy mattresses covered in outdoor fabric from Osborne and Little."

"I have all these beautiful hand-stitched table cloths that my great-grand mother made, I adore them and when I discovered the Serbian designer Ivana Maksimovic Hasecic buys vintage hand stitched table cloths and has them made into dresses, I knew I had to have one. Each one is a one off and has such a romantic spirit to it. I would wear this out to lunch or for dinner with my db Pom Pom basket bag I designed for Rae Feather. I used to only use baskets for the beach but over the past few years I take them everywhere, even in the city."

"I wear colour and print year round, but l embrace it even more so when I'm in Ibiza. You never feel self conscious wearing something bold here. The energy of the island embraces it! In London I might wear one stand out piece, but here I have no qualms wearing a raffia pink flecked headband by Born in The Sun with cherry raffia earrings by Mercedes Salazar, a pop of red lipstick and a bright dress, bangles and clutch."

"I adore colour, print and embroidery - that's originally what I studied at Central St Martin's before switching to journalism. I'm always drawn into a piece because of the colour and how it's crafted. This kaftan is by Pippa Holt and made by women in Mexico. I love the motifs she uses and the interesting colour combinations. The shapes are voluminous and I usually wear them loose when I go out in the day, and then sling a belt and some extra jewellery into my basket to make an easy switch for dinner."

"This is our adopted dog Molly. She belongs to our wonderful housekeepers Jane and Mark who look after our home throughout the year. But we have taken her into our hearts. She's a Labrador Alsatian mix and was rescued as an abandoned puppy. She is so full of love and dotes on my littlest especially."

"I've become quite the collector of straw bags. I used to buy them from the market here and make pom poms with my girls and attach them all over. Basket bags have become quite sophisticated, but they're all different. The shell one is a backpack I bought on my travels through Indonesia when I was at university. The red and black one is woven plastic with leather handles from Balenciaga. They are all so pretty I usually keep them dotted around my house and guests can help themselves to which ever they fancy.”

"I tan super easily. Austro-Hungarian genetics. But I'm all about the sunscreen. I can't believe I was covered in factor 2 as a child - but it's only factor 50 for me. I recently discovered the French brand SVR. It's fantastic for the whole family especially those with sensitive skin. It has a delicate summery fragrance but also contains no allergens and is alcohol, paraben, and Octocrylene free. I have a big basket by my pool with different versions of their sunscreen and another basket filled with large sun hats. I love collecting lots of different styles from the beach shops around the island and it means guests can travel light.Everything they need is here."

"I think Rae Feather does the best basket bags. I adore her classic monogrammed ones and she does clutches and small book bags as well as ones that are more suited to the city. I bought this dress at The Daily Dress Edit pop-up this spring. Johanna Sands was a new discovery for me. She makes all her dresses herself and they come in beautiful sugar-almond colours. This one is sweeping and the silhouette reminds me of a vintage ball gown, but the cut is loose and the linen makes it feel relaxed at the same time."
