Although the depths of winter are still a little way off, I always think it’s smart to start thinking about coats and outerwear now. Assess what you have, identify gaps and invest where needed before the very best items sell out. This issue has been compiled to help you find those clever purchases and celebrate the warm layers that will make wrapping up a joy.
We kick things off with the AW22 Coat Edit. Whenever we put together our trend reports, we aim to find the most inspiring catwalk looks but also offer shoppable versions that will last a lifetime. From leopard print to sleek black, we’ve rounded up the key styles to suit every taste. I’m looking to invest in a maxi-length coat and have my eye on Raey’s navy longline tuxedo style, which will work over my entire autumn wardrobe.
For this issue’s Style Notes, we wanted to explore what makes a perfect winter coat, so we reached out to some friends of ICONS and asked them to share their all-time favourite style. While La Double J’s JJ Martin reaches for luxe puffers to style out cold Milanese winters, Lisou’s Rene Macdonald relies on a statement coat to give her winter wardrobe pizzaz. Head to page 3 to find our more from the industry’s best dressed.
One piece of outerwear I cannot recommend enough is the wool blazer. Not only it is an outfit enhancer, giving everything you wear with it a lick of sharpness, it can also function as a jacket in itself. Once it gets really cold, you can even layer it underneath an oversized overcoat. When we did our autumn shoot for the last issue, I wore Isabel Marant’s Ezilea blazer and haven’t stopped praising it since. The silhouette is the perfect amount of of upscale and the wool is beautifully soft. If you’re looking to invest, make it this one. There are myriad ways to wear it, but we’ve showcased just four in our Style Sheet.
Once you have your outerwear sorted, you need to know what to wear under it. Knitted dresses and chunky boots are two main contenders. We have found the best of the best.
Finally, finishing touches. Every winter wardrobe needs some glow, so we wanted to shine a light on one of our favourite jewellery brands, Otiumberg. I’ve known sisters Rosanna and Christie for years and I’m continually impressed with their commitment to long-lasting design and quality. My own jewellery box is full of both delicate and statement pieces, which I’ll be layering over knits and adorning my earlobes and wrists with.
And what could set off beautiful jewellery better than an immaculate manicure? In our Beauty Focus feature, Petro and I share the four nail-polish shades that will take you from now into the festive season.
