  • Red Lipstick

As the seasons change and we swap sundresses and swimsuits for cosy knits and ankle boots, our make-up bag gets a revamp too. And the easiest way to do that is with the latest lipstick shades. Out with fruity lip balms and shimmering glosses. In with bold reds to complement winter’s muted palette and weightier fabrics. Here are four matt lip colours we love.

    NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment Vain£23

The problem with most matt lipsticks is that they can leave your lips feeling dry. However, this formula, which has a watery consistency but extremely dense pigment, doesn’t do that at all. Plus, the texture ensures the colour stays on your lips, so no risk of transfer onto clothes and coffee cups (or teeth). And this shade is so good: it’s a very dark red that’s still vibrant enough to look great on anybody. I swear it made my teeth look brighter and whiter.

I always gravitate towards red when the weather starts to get a little gloomy – it lifts my spirits and makes me feel so much more polished before a meeting or show. And this particular shade is one of those classic, glamorous, movie-star reds. The formula has a gorgeous velvety-matt finish, and stayed creamy and bright all day long with just a few touch-ups. Plus, it smells a bit like cocoa butter (which I love).

This is one of those timeless, saturated reds that’s bright and modern. It’s super-matt and quite chalky, which is my favourite finish for winter, but the colour doesn’t flake at all, unlike other formulas offering this same effect. I got full, opaque coverage in just two swipes, which makes touch-ups on the go a breeze. But amazingly, you can’t even feel the colour on your lips – it’s just so comfortable and hydrating.

What sets this formula apart is that it has the modern, matt finish that keeps bold shades stylishly muted, but it goes on quite sheer, so you can build colour to an intensity that suits you. It also glides on like a gloss and then dries to a smooth, velvety finish. I really like the applicator, which made it easy to get a sharp line around the edge of my lips. And the darker berry shade would be flattering on most skin tones, whether you wear it as a stain or a full-on statement colour.
