  • Everyday SPF

The three products we’ve learned will protect our skins from premature ageing are: vitamin C, retinol and everyday SPF. “Easy,” we hear you cry, “There’s already SPF in my moisturiser, CC cream and bronzer!” Unfortunately, though these do help, they are not a substitute for the full protection of a good standalone SPF. For an effective barrier from the sun and pollution, you need at least SPF30, although 50 is preferable. Here are our four favourites…

    Darphin Intral Shield£35

I am a big fan of Darphin Intral Shield SPF50. It is extremely lightweight, so only takes a few minutes to absorb into my skin. I use it as a base when I’m wearing make-up, as it leaves a matt finish and doesn’t make my usual base more oily. The bottle is tiny, but I have to say a little goes a long way – I have been using it every day for three months and I’m still only halfway through. The compact bottle also means it’s super-easy to travel with.

    Sarah Chapman Skin Insurance SPF30£49

I haven’t been using Sarah Chapman Skin Insurance SPF30 for as long as the Darphin product, but I have found it serves a different purpose. It’s a bit more oily but has a slight tint, so if I want to go make-up-free I can, and my skin has a more glowy finish than when I’m wearing a normal SPF. This offers full UVA, UVB, thermal and infrared radiation protection, and it is lightweight enough to wear every day without breaking out.

    SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense£37

I am a big fan of SkinCeuticals – the range of products always works well on my skin, so I really trust this brand. The Ultra Facial Defense SPF50 is a creamy formula, which I would describe as a lotion. It doesn’t have an overpowering scent and didn’t leave any white marks on my skin. The formula easily absorbs into my skin, providing a protective layer that feels very moisturising. I particularly like this product as it has high protection and contains formulated UV filters. Dermatologists advise you wear SPF30 for winter in the city, but in the hotter weather everyone should up their protection factor.

    Glossier Invisible Shield£20

I really loved this Glossier SPF gel – it is called an invisible shield for good reason. It comes in a water-gel formula, containing active microcapsules and a powerful mix of vitamins, including vitamin E. The gel slides on to the skin, so you can wear it under make-up. I found that it didn’t clog or feel heavy, which makes it good for combination skin, as it is an extra layer that doesn’t add any weight. The dash of sweet orange peel oil gives it a really fresh, citrusy smell. It is SPF30, which is perfect to use all year around.
