    • Look for pieces made from fine needlecord rather than jumbo corduroy. The former has a sharper appeal.
    • Corduroy isn’t just for trousers. It also works fashioned into autumnal staples such as jumpsuits, shirts and trenches.
    • For corduroy beginners, a blazer is a good place to start. Use it to add seasonal texture to your tailored trousers or jeans.

As winter fabrics go, corduroy is a classic, but it hasn’t always registered high on the style spectrum. Often associated with a fusty, outdated way of dressing, it has been overlooked in favour of sleeker alternatives. This season, however, it is having its moment in the (winter) sun, realised in refined silhouettes and rich colourways. Packing plenty of autumnal appeal with a nod to the ’70s, this is the fabric to reach for now.

    Top Tips

    • Don’t be afraid to mix other textures with cord. Fuzzy knits, faux fur, velvet and tweed all match well.
    • For officewear, keep cord looking smart by teaming it with polished leather boots and a sleek bag.
    • When off duty, a pop of corduroy will add interest to a cashmere knit and trainers.
