Join editors Petro and Laura behind the scenes of the fashion shoot for L.K.Bennett’s new Black Tie Collection – just in time for the party season.
L.K.Bennett is a British institution, known for their iconic tailoring, bags and shoes; whenever we’re on the lookout for anything from a classic brogue to a slick ankle boot or a chic evening shoe, we know L.K.Bennett won’t disappoint. When asked to bring the Black Tie Collection to life in a photoshoot, we jumped at the chance of being involved, and what a fun day it was! In this diary feature, we share a little sneak behind the scenes of our day at London’s Rosewood Hotel, shooting the new range of dresses, skirts and trousers in L.K.Bennett’s signature quality fabrics and demure cuts. Here we are in hair and make-up with Beni from George Northwood – we recorded our day on Instagram Stories to give our readers an insight into what it takes to create a beautiful set of photographs.
Hair and make-up-ready by the wonderful Lois Moorcroft, creating a ‘barely there’ look to complement the collection of embellished fabrics and sultry velvets. When it comes to eveningwear, let the clothes do the talking and keep everything else to a minimum.
Marilyn Monroe once said: ‘Give a girl the right shoes and she will conquer the world.’ Shoes can totally make or break an evening outfit. Our take on it is: the simpler the dress, the more ornate the shoes; the more ornate the dress the simpler the shoes. On the shoot we had so much to choose from, from velvet to satin and glitter.
Dressed and ready for our first shot, Laura is in a modern take on eveningwear in slick black velvet trousers paired with an embellished sweater, and Petro wears a high-neck midnight-blue beaded mini dress.
One of Petro’s favourite shots from the day. She says: ‘It is surprisingly hard to find beautiful dresses with long sleeves, but this is something I’m not prepared to compromise on, especially in winter. I love the high neck and delicate added sparkle in the embroidery – it’s shorter than I would usually wear, but cut at a very flattering length.’
Everyone on the shoot is helping out – here one of the girls from L.K.Bennett’s PR team reflects the perfect amount of light on us on a gloomy October day. Your evening outfit wouldn’t be complete without the perfect clutch. A structured box shape is our go-to – just remember to check your phone fits inside!
We both loved these shiny satin, pleated-bow court shoes – so slick and elegant, these aren’t just for Black Tie and will go with anything from a pair of jeans to your smartest dress.
Laura says about one of her favourite outfits of the day: ‘I don’t have enough occasions to wear full-length dresses, so I’d jump at a Black Tie dress code. I love the high neckline, little cap sleeves and sensual split. I paired it with velvet flats to give it a modern, relaxed spin.’
Our editor-at-large Deborah Brett arrives and takes a seat in hair and make-up to guest star in our video. Deborah has such great taste and experience in the fashion industry we thought she would make the perfect host to talk through the Black Tie Collection and model her own favourite piece.
We spent the second part of the day sitting around the table chatting about the clothes and what we loved most about them. Then we filmed our favourite outfit while out and about; it was such a great way to showcase the fabrics moving. Watch the video now by clicking on this link – we hope you enjoy it!
